Once you have mastered the Basics of Modding, the next question is: "What should I install?" Here is our curated list of mods that fit seamlessly into the game or overhaul it completely.

The Essentials (QoL)

These mods don't change the game's setting but fix its annoyances.

1. Diplomacy

The vanilla diplomacy system is... basic. This mod adds Non-Aggression Pacts, Alliances, and the ability to send messengers to lords (saving you from chasing them across the map). It also adds "War Exhaustion," preventing endless wars.

2. Improved Garrisons

Stop manually riding to every village to recruit peasants for your castle. This mod allows you to set a "Recruiter" who will gather troops for you. It also lets you train garrison troops automatically.

3. DismembermentPlus

For the visceral warrior. This mod allows you to cut off heads, arms, and legs in combat. Purely cosmetic, purely satisfying.

New Gear and Troops

Open Source Armory (OSA)

This is a massive collection of lore-friendly armor and weapons. It fills the gaps in the vanilla item roster, adding hundreds of helmets, body armor, and shields that look like they belong in Calradia.

Calradia at War

Adds dozens of new Minor Factions and bandit types. It makes the map feel more alive and dangerous, perfect for a mercenary playthrough.

Total Overhauls

Eagle Rising (The Roman Empire)

Travel back in time. The Empire is replaced with the Roman Republic/Empire, Vlandia becomes Celts/Gauls, and Aserai become Carthage/Sassanids. New armor, new troop trees, and new mechanics.

Realm of Thrones

The premier Game of Thrones mod. The map is Westeros. The factions are the Great Houses. You can join the Night's Watch or fight for the Iron Throne. It even includes dragons (yes, really).

The Old Realms

A Warhammer Fantasy conversion. Magic, Vampires, and gunpowder. It pushes the engine to its limit but offers an experience unlike anything else.

Summary

Start with Diplomacy and Improved Garrisons to fix the campaign layer. Once stable, add OSA for fashion. If you get bored of Calradia, install Eagle Rising or Realm of Thrones for a fresh adventure.
