Factors that determine overland speed and how to optimize them.

Party Speed Mechanics: The Math Behind Movement

To truly master map movement in Bannerlord, you need to understand the math. Speed isn't just a number; it's a sum of bonuses and penalties.

The Formula

Your speed is calculated as: Speed = (Base Speed + Cavalry Bonus + Leader Bonuses) * (1 - Penalties)

Note: The exact formula in code is complex, but this is the effective logic.

Speed Modifier Breakdown A breakdown of positive and negative modifiers.

Cavalry Bonus (Footmen on Horses)

This is often misunderstood.

  • Mounted Troops: Have high base speed.

  • Infantry: Have low base speed.

  • Footmen on Horses: If you have X infantry and X riding horses in your inventory, your infantry are treated as mounted for map movement.

    • Tip: Sumpter Horses (Pack) do not count for this. You need Riding Horses (Midlands Palfrey, etc.) or Warhorses.

Penalties Explained

1. Herd Penalty

The game allows 2 animals per troop before applying a penalty.

  • 1 Mount (for riding).

  • 1 Pack Animal (for carry weight).

  • Any animal beyond this count contributes to the Herd Penalty.

  • Example: 100 troops can manage 200 animals (e.g., 100 warhorses + 100 mules). If you have 300 horses, you will be slowed.

Inventory Management for Speed Keep your animal count in check. More is not always better.

2. Terrain Modifiers

Terrain applies a percentage reduction to speed.

  • Forest: Severe penalty to cavalry. Battanian culture reduces this.

  • Snow: Severe penalty. Sturgian culture reduces this.

  • Desert: Slight penalty to non-Aserai.

Campaign Map Terrain Navigating around forests can be faster than going through them.

3. Night Penalty

Speed is reduced by roughly 20-30% at night. This applies to everyone, including AI. Use this time to rest or sneak.

4. Prisoners

Prisoners add to your weight and have a dragging effect if they exceed your party's prisoner limit.
