Prison Breaks & Rescue Missions

November 21, 2025

How to rescue companions or lords from captivity.

Breaking a lord out of prison is one of the most rewarding—and risky—activities in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord. It yields massive Roguery XP and instantly boosts your relation with the rescued lord's clan.

Prison Break Guide

Preparation: The Right Gear

You cannot enter a town's dungeon wearing your full plate armor. You are restricted to your Civilian Outfit.

  1. Open your Inventory (I).

  2. Click the Civilian toggle (small hat icon) near your character's head.

  3. Equip the best "Civilian" armor you can find (usually studded leather or fancy robes).

  4. Weapons: You cannot carry polearms or heavy shields. Bring:

    • Two-Handed Sword: If it has the civilian tag, it's the best for killing guards quickly.

    • Throwing Knives: Good for taking out the first guard silently.

Civilian Loadout

The Infiltration

  1. Go to a town where an ally lord is imprisoned.

  2. Choose "Go to the Keep" then "Go to the Dungeon".

  3. Select "Stage a rescue".

    • Note: You may need to bribe the guard to enter if your relation is low or you are at war. A high Roguery Skill helps here.

The Breakout

Once inside, you are in a combat instance.

  • Objective: Kill all guards and reach the exit with the prisoner.

  • The Prisoner: The lord will fight with you, but they often have no armor and a weak weapon. Do not let them die. If they fall unconscious, the mission fails.

  • Tactics:

    • Take aggro. Make the guards attack you, not the prisoner.

    • Use corners. Don't let guards swarm you.

    • Aim for headshots to kill quickly.

Rewards

  • Relation: +10 to +30 relation with the rescued lord and their clan.

  • Roguery XP: Huge amount of experience.

  • Freedom: The lord spawns at their party location, ready to raise an army again.
