Sturgia Troop Tree

Heavy infantry and shock troop progression.
Sturgia Troop Tree
The Sturgian troop tree is defined by its heavy infantry. Unlike the Vlandians with their cavalry or Battanians with their archers, Sturgia focuses on the shield wall. Their units are tough, well-armored, and designed to grind the enemy down in close combat.
A visual overview of the Sturgian unit upgrade paths.
Recruit Line (Common)
The Sturgian Recruit starts with an axe and shield. As they upgrade, you have two main paths:
The Infantry Path
This path leads to the Sturgian Soldier, Sturgian Spearman, and eventually splits into:
Sturgian Heavy Axeman: Equipped with heavy mail and a large round shield. Great for the front line.
Sturgian Heavy Spearman: Also shielded, but with a spear. Excellent for stopping cavalry charges.
Sturgian Heroic Line Breaker: The jewel of the infantry line. A shock troop with a two-handed axe. They have no shield, so keep them behind the Heavy Axemen until lines clash.
The Heroic Line Breaker, Sturgia's premier shock infantry unit.
The Archer Path
The Sturgian Woodsman upgrades to the Sturgian Hunter and finally the Sturgian Veteran Bowman. While serviceable, they lack the range and damage of Fians or Palatine Guards.
Noble Line (Elite)
The Sturgian Warrior Son upgrades into the Varyag line, eventually becoming the Sturgian Druzhinnik Champion. These are heavy cavalry units. They are slower than Vlandian Banner Knights but have thicker armor and large shields. Interestingly, they are extremely effective when dismounted, essentially becoming elite infantry.
The Druzhinnik Champion, a heavily armored noble cavalry unit.
Best Army Composition
A balanced Sturgian army should rely heavily on infantry.
50% Heavy Axemen/Spearmen: Your anvil.
20% Heroic Line Breakers: Your hammer.
20% Archers: To force the enemy to advance.
10% Druzhinnik Cavalry: To protect your flanks.
