Pros/cons of swords, axes, polearms, bows, crossbows, and thrown weapons.
Weapon Types Explained
Understanding weapon mechanics is the first step to conquering Calradia. It's not just about the damage number; it's about how that damage is delivered.
Damage Types
Cut: Excellent against unarmored targets but struggles against heavy mail/plate. (e.g., Swords, Axes).
Pierce: Penetrates armor effectively. (e.g., Spears, Arrows, some Swords).
Blunt: Ignores armor to a degree and can knock down enemies. Most importantly, blunt damage knocks enemies unconscious instead of killing them, allowing you to take prisoners. (e.g., Maces, Hammers).
Reach and Speed
Every weapon has a "Sweet Spot".
Short Weapons (Maces, Daggers): Fast swing speed, great for face-hugging in sieges.
Long Weapons (Glaives, 2H Axes): Slower, but huge reach. You must hit with the blade, not the handle (handle hits do minuscule damage).
See Combat Mechanics Guide for hitbox details.
Weapon Classes
One-Handed
Fast and allows a shield. The bread and butter of Best Infantry Units.
Best Faction: Empire (Spatha).
Two-Handed
High risk, high damage. Can break shields.
Polearms
Spears stop cavalry charges. Swinging polearms (Glaives) are devastating from horseback.
Best Faction: Khuzait (Glaive).
Ranged
Bows: Fast fire rate.
Crossbows: High damage, slow reload.
Throwing: Short range, massive shield damage.
Crafted vs. Bought
Why craft? Because Equipment, Crafting, and Smithing allows you to maximize stats. A Masterwork crafted sword can have faster swing speed and higher cut damage than anything you find in a shop.
Tip: Use Fine Steel for the best results. Check Smithing for Profit.
Conclusion
Don't just look at the price tag. Consider the damage type, reach, and speed. A fast mace might be better than a legendary sword if you're fighting heavily armored knights.
