Terrain & Weather Effects

How terrain and weather affect movement and combat.
Terrain & Weather Effects in Bannerlord
In Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, the ground beneath your boots (or hooves) and the sky above are not just cosmetic backdrops—they are active participants in every battle and campaign maneuver. Whether you are chasing down a bandit party or commanding a legion against the Battanians in their home forests, understanding terrain and weather modifiers is crucial for victory.

Campaign Map Effects
Your party's movement speed on the campaign map determines whether you can catch prey or escape predators. Terrain plays a massive role in this calculation.
Forest
Forests are dense and difficult to traverse.
Effect: Significant movement speed penalty for most parties.
Cavalry Penalty: Parties with a high ratio of horses suffer extra penalties in forests.
Culture Bonus: The Battania culture bonus negates a significant portion of this speed penalty, allowing them to move through woods much faster than invaders.
Snow
The frozen north is treacherous.
Effect: Movement speed reduction.
Culture Bonus: Sturgia has a culture bonus that reduces the speed penalty in snow, making them agile defenders of their homeland.
Desert
The shifting sands of the south slow down heavy columns.
Effect: Moderate speed reduction.
Culture Bonus: The Aserai Sultanate moves faster in deserts, allowing them to control trade routes and outmaneuver enemies in the Nahasa.

Battlefield Effects
When the swords are drawn, terrain dictates tactics.
Battanian forests providing cover and tactical advantages.
Terrain Types
Open Plains: The playground of cavalry. Charges are devastating here.
Forests: Trees block line of sight for archers and stop cavalry charges dead in their tracks. This is where infantry shines.
Rivers & Bridges: Natural choke points. Defending a bridge allows a small force to hold off a much larger army by negating their numbers advantage.
Hills/High Ground: Archers on high ground get better range and line of sight. Charging uphill tires troops and slows momentum.
Weather Conditions
Weather is dynamic and can change the tide of battle.
Rain reducing visibility and affecting archer performance.
Rain & Fog: Reduces visibility range significantly. This is a nightmare for archer-heavy armies (like Vlandian crossbowmen) as they cannot target enemies until they are close. It forces melee engagements.
Snow: Similar to rain but can also affect morale mechanics in prolonged campaigns (winter attrition).
Night: Darkness reduces visibility. Torches are used, but spotting distance is much lower.
Strategic Adaptations
To master Calradia, you must adapt your strategy to the map.
Know Your Enemy: Don't fight Battania in the woods. Their Fian Champions will tear you apart from cover while your cavalry gets stuck on trees. Lure them into the open plains.
Use the Elements: If you are facing a superior horse archer force (like the Khuzaits), try to engage them in a forest or during a storm to limit their mobility and range.
Plan Your Route: Use the Map of Calradia & Regions to plan trade routes that avoid difficult terrain unless your culture is suited for it.
Mastering the environment is the mark of a true commander. Don't just look at the troop count; look at where the battle will be fought.
